10 easy ways to play with Linux without leaving Windows

November 5, 2009 Administrator Leave a comment

While I haven’t made the switch to Linux full time, I find myself spending more and more time experimenting of late. In particular, I’m enjoying projects like Moblin and the Ubuntu Netbook Remix.

If you’re still using Windows for your primary OS there are tons of ways to get your feet wet like a true penguin without making any serious commitments. Here are ten ways to play with Linux painlessly — if you have another to share, please post it in the comments!

Virtualization

Moba LiveCD
Moba uses QEMU to boot LiveCD and LiveUSB images right from your Windows desktop. It works as a portable app and also offers context menu integration so you can right-click to launch fresh images.

Portable Ubuntu
Using Colinux, Pulseaudio for Windows, and the Xming X server, this package allows you to boot a fully-working Ubuntu environment inside Windows right from your usb flash drive. The bigger the better, obviously. I’d recommend an 8GB or 16GB if you plan on using it regularly.

VirtualBox
and VirtualboxImages.com

Sun’s VirtualBox is a very capable virtualization app, and it’s certainly priced right. Sure, you can download LiveCD ISO files, mount them, and sit through a boring install process — but why bother? Head over to VirtualBoxImages.com and grab some ready-to-use VMs.

VMWare Player and Appliances MarketplaceIf you don’t want to pony up for Workstation, VMWare’s free player is a good, free way you can experiment with loads of Linux distros. Just grab them from the Appliance Marketplace – community members are always contributing new releases.

KDE for Windows
While it’s not quite “playing with Linux,” being able to experiment with a whole slew of KDE apps on Windows is pretty slick. Download the installer, choose the KDE goodies you want to install, and wait – the process can take quite a long time depending on how much there is to download.

USB Flash Drive Utilities

Fedora LiveUSB Creator and UNetBootIn
Burning CDs and DVDs takes too long, and it usually ends up in a lot of waste. I can’t count how many time I’ve found a stack of unloved, scratched up Linux discs laying around the shop. These two utilities allow you to transfer those ISO and IMG files to a USB flash drive instead.

LiLi (formerly USBuntu Live Creator)
Unlike the previous apps, LiLi can also wrap your distro in VirtualBox for portable booting from any Windows box. LiLi can also create persistent storage areas on your flash drive for LiveUSB environments.

Others

Boot.kernel.org
This might not be the best way to play if you’re stuck on a moderate-speed DSL connection like I am, but it’s still a pretty amazing option. Grab yourself a GPXE boot image for USB, floppy, or CD, and boot your choice of Debian, Ubuntu, Damn Small, Knoppix, or Fedora – over the Internet. How cool is that?

Wubi
Download Ubuntu or any of the official variants – Kubuntu, Xubuntu, etc. – and mount the ISO file in Windows using an app like Virtual Clonedrive (or your favorite alternative). You’ll find wubi.exe in the drive’s root folder – launch it, and you’ll have a Ubuntu install accessible via the Windows boot menu in a matter of minutes.

Many Ubuntu-based distros – like Mint, for example – make use of Wubi as well.

Windows 7 Edition Comparison

Introduction

There are total 5 editions Microsoft offers to Windows 7, from starter all the way up to enterprise, which pretty much covered all levels of use. Whether you are a basic home user, or IT pro, or a savvy user in large enterprise, you will find one edition that suits your needs perfectly.

Starter Edition

The edition is the one Microsoft made just for small notebook PCs, and is only available through the OEM channel on the new PCs limited to the specific types of hardware. So you can’t buy it directly from any sales channel. The features on Starter Edition are quite limited but still supports the unique features that are only available on Windows 7, such as Jump Lists, Pin, Snap, and Windows Search. If you want to enjoy more multimedia entertainment on your PC, Microsoft recommends Home Premium.

Enterprise

Windows 7 Enterprise is the Windows 7 edition with unique technology designed to address the needs of enterprise customers, and only available through Microsoft Software Assurance Licensing. It has a few features that are not available in other editions, such as:

  1. DirectAccess
Give mobile users seamless access to corporate networks without a need to VPN.
  2. BranchCache
Decrease time branch office users spend waiting to download files across the network.
  3. Enterprise Search Scopes
Find information on network locations including SharePoint sites with a simple user interface.
  4. BitLocker & BitLocker To Go
Help protect data on PCs and removable drives, with manageability to enforce encryption and backup of recovery keys.
  5. AppLocker
Specify what software is allowed to run on user’s PCs through centrally managed, but flexible, Group Policies.
  6. Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) Optimizations
Improved user experience for VDI with multimon and microphone support. Plus the ability to reuse virtual machine (VHD) images to boot a physical PC.
  7. Multi Lingual User Interface
Create a single operating system (OS) image for deployment to users worldwide.

Fenomena Sejadah Berdiri

October 25, 2009 Administrator Leave a comment

A Well known scholar from the Islamic Gateway www.ummah.net brings you a glimpse of this study.

Dr.Tarig Al Swaidan discovered some verses in the Holy Qur’an that mention one thing is equal to another, i.e. men are equal to women.

Although this makes sense grammatically, the astonishing fact is that the number of times the word man appears in the Qur’an is 24 and number of times the word woman appears is also 24, therefore not only is this phrase correct in the grammatical sense but also true mathematically, i.e. 24 = 24.

Upon further analysis of various verses, he discovered that this is consistent throughout the whole Qur’an, where it says one thing is like another. See below for astonishing result of the words mentioned number of times in Arabic Qur’an: Word/ Meaning Mentioned in the Quran

There is no value that one can set to the words of the Creator. It is a treasure of which guides those that want to succeed in this life and the hereafter.

Solar panel from hair…A hoax or real??

    September 15, 2009 Administrator Leave a comment

Teenager invents £23 solar panel that could be solution to developing world’s energy needs … made from human hair

    By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 1:52 PM on 10th September 2009

A new type of solar panel using human hair could provide the world with cheap, green electricity, believes its teenage inventor.

Milan Karki, 18, who comes from a  village in rural Nepal, believes he has found the solution to the developing world’s energy needs.

    article-0-06546E62000005DC-46_468x286

The young inventor says hair is easy to use as a conductor in solar panels and could revolutionise renewable energy.

Hair-raising: Science student Milan Karki with his innovative solar panel made with human hair while a friend holds a light bulb above his head

‘First I wanted to provide electricity for my home, then my village. Now I am thinking for the whole world,’ said Milan, who attends school in the capital, Kathmandu.

The hair replaces silicon, a pricey component typically used in solar panels, and means the panels can be produced at a low cost for those with no access to power, he explained.

In Nepal, one of the poorest countries in the world, many rural areas lack access to electricity and even in areas connected to power lines, users face shortages of up to 16 hours a day.

Milan and four classmates initially made the solar panel as an experiment but the teens are convinced it has wide applicability and commercial viability.

    EFG9392
Close shave:  Milan (second from right) demonstrates his solar panel in a tiny barber shop in Kathmandu

‘I’m trying to produce commercially and distribute to the districts. We’ve already sent a couple out to the districts to test for feasibility,’ he said.

The solar panel, which produces 9 V (18 W) of energy, costs around £23 to make from raw materials.

But if they were mass-produced, Milan says they could be sold for less than half that price, which could make them a quarter of the price of those already on the market.

Melanin, a pigment that gives hair its colour, is light sensitive and also acts as a type of conductor. Because hair is far cheaper than silicon the appliance is less costly.

    article-0-06546F9D000005DC-575_468x313

Hair today: A detailed shot shows the human hair used as an alternative to silicon

The solar panel can charge a mobile phone or a pack of batteries capable of providing light all evening.

Milan began his quest to create electricity when he was a boy living in Khotang, a remote district of Nepal completely unconnected to electricity. According to him, villagers were skeptical of his invention at first.

‘They believe in superstitions, they don’t believe in science. But now they believe,’ he said.

    article-0-06547256000005DC-635_468x286
Cost effective: The solar-hair panel is estimated to be four times cheaper than an industrial made solar panel of comparable capacity

He first tried to use water currents hydro power  on a small scale, but said the experiment became too expensive.

‘I searched for new, other renewable, affordable sources. People in these places are living the life of the stone age even in the 21st century,’ he said.

Milan, whose hero is the inventor Thomas Eddison, describes himself as lucky because his family could afford for him to receive a proper education while many other villagers are forced to work from an early age. Most of those from his village are illiterate.

He was originally inspired after reading a book by physicist Stephen Hawking, which discussed ways of creating static energy from hair.

    article-0-06547172000005DC-352_468x312
It’s got the power: A digital multimeter shows the voltage generated by the innovative panel

‘I realised that Melanin was one of the factors in conversion of energy,’ he said.

Half a kilo of hair can be bought for only 16p in Nepal and lasts a few months, whereas a pack of batteries would cost 50p and last a few nights.

People can replace the hair easily themselves, says Milan, meaning his solar panels need little servicing.

Three years after first coming up with the idea, Milan says the idea is more important than ever because of the crucial need for renewable energies in the face of finite power sources and global warming.

‘Slowly, natural resources are degrading so it is necessary to think about the future,” he said.

‘One day we will be in a great crisis regarding this fuel so it is a good thing to do today.

‘This is an easy solution for the crisis we are having today. We have begun the long walk to save the planet.’

Medical mystery: Calvino Inman, 15, cries tears of real blood, and doctors don’t know why

Calvino Inman, 15, from Tenn., experiences uncontrollable tears of blood up to three times a day, confounding doctors and specialists.

    amd_calvino_inman_blood

    ABC
The disturbing condition comes in bouts lasting anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour.

A 15-year-old boy cries tears of real blood up to three times every day — and no one can figure out why.

Calvino Inman of Rockwood, Tenn., says his friends have called him “possessed.” The tears are uncontrollable and can last anywhere from 15 minutes up to an hour.

“Sometimes, I can feel it coming up, like a tear. I feel my eyes watering,” Inman told ABC News affiliate WATE. “Sometimes, it will burn as it comes out.”

Inman’s worried mother, Tammy Mynatt, said she has taken her son for an MRI, a CAT scan, ultrasounds and to appointments with specialists. No doctor has been able to diagnose her son’s condition.

Mynatt called 911 when the tears first occurred.

“The scariest thing in my life is when he looked at me and said, ‘Mom, am I going to die?’ That right there broke my heart,” she told WATE.

Ophthalmologist Dr. Rex Hamilton told “Good Morning America” that Inman could be suffering from a condition called Haemolacria, which means “bloody tears.”

“That is just a descriptive term of the manifestation of the bloody tears,” Hamilton said. “It says nothing about what’s causing that … It’s a one-in-a-million kind of condition.”

Speaking on WATE, Mynatt put out a desperate plea for any doctor with experience in treating the condition to get in touch.

“I don’t care where we have to travel. I will go wherever we need to go … I just please want somebody to help my baby.”
